রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের লেখা ‘দুই বিঘা জমি’ কবিতাটি একটি ব্যঙ্গাত্মক কবিতা। কবিতাটি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের “চিত্রা” নামক কাব্যগ্রন্থের অন্তগর্ত। বাংলার গ্রামীণ সমাজের শ্রেণীবিভেদ আর দুর্বলের উপর সবলের অত্যাচার নিয়ে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর কবিতাটি লিখেছেন। এ কবিতায় গরীব শ্রেণীর অসহায়ত্বের দিকটি ফুটি উঠেছে। এখানে উপেনের জমি জোর করে জমিদার এর দখলে নেওয়ার ঘটনা অতি নিপুণভাবে কবিতার ছন্দে বলা হয়েছে।

গরিব কৃষক উপেন একজন প্রান্তিক কৃষক। তার যে জমিজমা ছিল তার মধ্যে দুই বিঘা জমি ছাড়া সব ঋণের দায়ে তাকে হারাতে হয়েছে। তার সম্বল এখন শুধু ভিটেমাটির এই দুই বিঘা জমি। কিন্তু উপেনের কপাল খারাপ। তার এলাকার জমিদার বাবুর ভূমির শেষ নেই। তবুও জমিদার বাবুর নজর পড়ে উপেনের দুই বিঘা জমির উপর বাবু উপেনের জমি কিনতে চান। শুনে উপেন বলে, রাজা এই দেশের মালিক আপনি, আপনার জায়গার অভাব নেই কিন্তু আমার এই জায়গাটি ছাড়া মরার মতাে ঠাঁই নাই । উপেন দুই হাত জোড় করে বাবুর কাছে ভিটেটা না নেওয়ার।জন্য অনুরােধ করে। এতে বাবু রেগে চোখ গরম করে চুপ করে থাকেন। নাছােড়বান্দা বাবু দেড় মাস পরে মিথ্যে ঋণের দায়ে উপেনের প্রতি ডিক্রি জারি করেন। উপেন নিজের ভিটে ছেড়ে পথে পথে ঘুরে বেড়ায়। এভাবে অনেক বছর কেটে যায়।

অনেক তীর্থস্থান, শহর, গ্রাম সে বিচরণ করে, তবুও উপেন তার দুই বিঘা জমির কথা ভুলতে পারে না। তাই মাতৃভূমির টানে উপেন একদিন নিজ গ্রামে ফিরে আসে। গ্রামে এসে নিজ বাড়ির সামনে এসে উপস্থিত হয়ে দেখে বাড়িতে আগের কোন চিহ্ন নেই । উপেনের মন বিষগ্ন হয়ে পড়ে, তার বসতভিটা নিজ ঐতিহ্য ভুলে অন্য রূপ ধারণ করেছে। নিজের বাড়িতে এসে উপেন স্মৃতিকাতর হয়ে পড়ে। তার চোখ জলে ভরে যায়।

অবশেষে তার ছেলেবেলার সেই আমগাছটির দিকে চোখ পড়ে উপেনের। স্মৃতিময় আমগাছটি দেখে তার মনের ব্যথা দূর হয়ে যায়। আমগাছটির নিচে বসে সে ভাবতে থাকে ছেলেবেলার কথাগুলাে। তখন হটাৎ তার কোলের কাছে দুটি আম ঝরে পড়ে। ক্ষুধার্ত উপেন ভাবে আমগাছটি তাকে চিনতে পেরে দুটি আম উপহার দিয়েছে। কিন্তু আম দুটি হাতে নিতেই বাগানের মালি লাঠি হাতে এসে উপেনকে গালিগালাজ করে, উপেনকে ধরে বাবুর কাছে নিয়ে যায়। বাবু তখন মাছ ধরছিলেন। মালির কাছে সব শুনে বাবু রেগে উপেনকে বকা দেন, মারতে চান। উপেন কাতর হয়ে। বাবুর কাছে আম দুটো ভিক্ষা চায়। কিন্তু বাবু উপেনকে সাধুবেশী চোর বলে উল্লেখ করেন। এতে উপেন হতভম্ব হয়ে যায়। চোর উপাধি শুনে উপেনের চোখ দিয়ে ভাগ্যের নিষ্ঠুরতা ও পরিহাসের কথা মনে পড়ে অশ্রু গড়িয়ে পড়তে থাকে।

সমাজের প্রভাবশালী মানুষ গরিব, দুঃখী, খেটে খাওয়া মানুষদের ধনসম্পদ আত্মসাৎ করে ধনী হয়। তাদের এই সম্পদের লােভের কারণে তারা নিজেদের মানবতাকে বিসর্জন দিয়ে মিথ্যার আশ্রয় নিতেও কুণ্ঠাবােধ করেন না। তারা সমাজের অসহায় মানুষদের প্রতারিত করে তাদের নুন্যতম সম্পদটুকু কেড়ে নিয়ে নিজেরা সম্পদের পাহাড় গড়ে তুলে। কিন্তু কেউ কখনাে প্রতিবাদ করতে গেলে উল্টো দশজনকে ঘুষ দিয়ে প্রতিবাদীকে দোষী সাব্যস্ত করে দেয়। তাই আমাদের সমাজের সকলের উচিৎ ধনী শ্রেণির নিষ্ঠুরতাকে অবজ্ঞা করে দুর্দশাগ্রস্ত দরিদ্রদের প্রতি সহানুভূতিশীল হওয়া।
