But to fulfill this dream, first of all we need to become proficient in English and have to prove it with tests. A few English language proficiency tests are conventional. But these tests vary from country to country and from university to university. But sometimes these tests vary from subject to subject also. For example, if someone wants to go to the USA to do MBA, the biggest condition to get a good scholarship is- GMAT. However, GMAT Score is accepted worldwide as a standard measure for business school success. So today we are going to know all about GMAT.

What is GMAT & Who needs to do?

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. It is a computerized test and required to pursue a degree in Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at various universities in USA. It may also requireded to some other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia. GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) handles all of these tasks like- the registration process, taking the test, setting the criteria etc. This test developed and designed by GMAC. GMAT assesses the candidates’ analytical writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in standard written English.

Structure of GMAT

Total time of this test is 3 hours and 30 minutes and total marks 800. Quantitative and verbal section numbers are considered together. The numbers in the Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning sections are not considered along with the total number. These two categories will be considered differently. The total number is increased by 10. For example- 550,560,570.

Exam Method

GMAT has 4 sections. Total 91 questions have to be answered.

Analytical Writing Assessment

Verbal

Quantitative

Integrated Reasoning

Analytical Writing Assessment

This section tests the ability of the candidate to analyze the argument. Here candidates have to write two essays like GRE (Issue task, argument task) and there will be 30 minutes for each. The score is 1-6.

Verbal

75 minutes time and 41 questions in this section. There are 3 types of questions-

Reading Comprehension- There will be a passage of about 300-350 words on a particular topic and multiple choice questions based on it. By the passage, one has to understand what the author wants to convey, how much the author cares about the subject he has written etc.

Critical Reasoning- In this subsection candidates will have a short paragraph and a question or statement about that paragraph. There will be five options below it. Candidates have to find out key points that strengthen, influence or weaken the given argument and choose the best possible answer to the question.

Sentence Correction- In this subsection, candidates will have a sentence with an underlined portion and multiple choices to answer.

Quantitative

This is the math section. This 85minute section will have total of 36 questions, including two types of questions (data sufficiency and problem-solving). Calculator cannot be used.

Problem Solving – 1 of the 5 options to choose the correct answer.

Data Sufficiency – 1 question and 2 statements (1 & 2) will be given. To answer that question, select A, B, C, D, E based on how much information is needed.

Integrated Reasoning (IR)

This 30minute section requires both Math and Verbal. Data, charts, graphs have to be analyzed together.

Table Analysis- Some information will be sorted in a table and candidates are asked to pick answers from true/false along with multiple statements to answer each question.

Graphics Interpretation: There will be graphs and some information. Candidates are asked to explain it and answer certain questions with statements given in a drop-down menu.

Multi-Source Reasoning: There will be 3 passages and these 3 passages will tell three incidents. Candidates have to verify true/false according to the passage.

Two-Part Analysis: This subsection will measure candidate’s skill to solve complex problems including verbal, quantitative, or a combination of both and also measures candidate’s ability to solve simultaneous equations, evaluate trade-offs, and discern relationships between two entities.

Since this is a computerized test, the next question will come up depending on the answer to each question.
